Personal relationships between supervisors and subordinates can have significant complications for the workplace. If the relationship sours, a sexual harassment or retaliation claim may arise. If others perceive the relationship as drawing undeserved favorable treatment towards one party, a decline in staff morale and productivity may develop.
Various statistics report that more than half of employees have engaged in workplace romances at some point in their career. Given how common workplace romances are, instead of trying to eliminate romance at work, consider the following principles:
Sometimes workplace relationships work out – and sometimes they don’t. Employers should evaluate the risks related to romantic relationships in the workplace and adopt appropriate policies to protect the employer’s interests and set parameters for dating and close personal relationships at work.
