Course Description

Federal and state wage and hour regulations are arguably the most confusing and difficult area of employment and personnel law to administer. Since wage violations often result in significant back-pay awards, it is essential to be knowledgeable in this unique area of the law.

The course includes a comprehensive overview of federal wage and hour laws as well as Washington, Oregon, and Idaho state wage and hour requirements.

This course is designed to acquaint controllers, managers, bookkeepers, supervisors, human resources, and payroll department personnel with the various aspects of wage and hour law.

Note: Understanding Wage and Hour Law is offered as a stand-alone class and is also one module in HR Fundamentals.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the basic statutory policies that apply to non-exempt (overtime eligible) employees.
  • Determine the impact of approving or denying a non-exempt employee’s request to vary his or her schedule.
  • Estimate whether an employee is more likely than not subject to or exempt from overtime pay, given a list of job duties.
  • Decide whether it is necessary to seek guidance or advice from his or her supervisor, a human resources professional, or an attorney given a fact pattern.
