Course Description

Failing to recognize and respond appropriately to drug and alcohol use in the workplace has serious consequences: increased safety incidents, reduced team performance, and costly legal liability. Supervisors are often the first line of defense, yet many are unprepared to navigate this complex and sensitive subject.

Recognizing and Responding to Drug Use in the Workplace prepares supervisors to take informed, confident action. It breaks down the key elements of a drug-free workplace program, including the reasonable suspicion testing process and supporting employees after disclosure of substance abuse. Throughout, supervisors review best practices for ensuring confidentiality and legal compliance. It's a crucial step in protecting both people and the organization.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the most common signs or symptoms displayed by an employee who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Identify the steps to follow before directing the employee to take a reasonable suspicion test
  • Describe how the Employee Assistance Program can be utilized in resolving a work performance problem
  • Describe the various employment actions resulting from a positive drug test, including last-chance agreements
