Course Description

Managing employee leaves of absence while maintaining compliance with employment law can be an increasing challenge for HR Professionals. This course is designed to assist in the process of identifying situations in which statutory or legal mandates will affect an HR Professional’s course of action. It will also outline the differences between FMLA, Washington Paid Family and Medical Leave (WA PFML), Paid Leave Oregon, the Oregon Family Leave Act (OFLA), and the ADA. This class addresses all Washington and Oregon leaves including Domestic Violence Leave, Military Leave, and Sick Leave.

Participants attending from member organizations with less than 50 employees, and who are not close to becoming FMLA eligible, are advised to attend the Morning Session which includes instruction about all leaves including WPFML and ADA leave as an accommodation.

Participants from companies with 50 or more employees (or fast approaching that number) are encouraged to sign up for the Extended Session, which will go into further detail regarding additional regulations that come into play with companies of that size.

After completing this course, participants will be able to:

  • Manage all the required leaves effectively, and efficiently, including pregnancy, domestic violence, and military family leave.
  • Determine the applicability of specific leave laws to the employer’s workplace.
  • Identify triggers necessitating the employer’s communication of leave rights to an employee.
  • Understand the information an employee is allowed to request to confirm leave eligibility.
  • Understand the nuances of the Americans with Disabilities Act and what is entailed in the “interactive process”.
  • Identify the components of a ‘Reasonable Accommodation’ and “Undue Hardship”.
  • Understand the nuances of WA PFML, Paid Leave Oregon, and OFLA.
